What we do

Modern Olympic fencing features three distinct disciplines: foil, épée, and sabre. Each weapon has its own unique characteristics, rules, and historical origins. Texas Fencing competes in all three weapons, allowing students to discover which discipline best suits their natural abilities and preferences. Whether you're an experienced swordsman or completely new to the sport, we welcome you to join our team! We offer introductory classes, competitive opportunities, and equipment for all three weapons.

WHAT IS FOIL?

The foil is a light thrusting weapon weighing less than 500 grams. It has a flexible rectangular blade and a small circular guard that protects the hand. The foil originated as a practice weapon for dueling with rapiers. In foil, points are scored only by hitting the opponent's torso (including the back, chest, shoulders, and groin). Hits to the arms, legs, neck, or head do not count. Many coaches recommend foil for new fencers because it teaches fundamental techniques and tactical concepts that translate well to other weapons. Choose foil if you enjoy technical precision, tactical complexity, and elegant bladework!

What is Épée?

The épée is the heaviest of the three weapons, weighing up to 770 grams. It features a rigid triangular blade and a large bell guard to protect the hand. The épée evolved directly from dueling swords of the 19th century and is the most reminiscent of actual combat of the three modern fencing weapons. In épée, the entire body is valid target area from head to toe. Épée is also the only weapon with no right of way rules—the first fencer to hit scores, and if both fencers hit within 40 milliseconds of each other, both receive a point. This creates a more defensive and cautious style of fencing. Choose épée if you prefer patience and psychological games with fewer rules to restrict your options!

WHAT IS Sabre?

The sabre is a light cutting weapon weighing up to 500 grams. It has a curved guard that wraps around to protect the knuckles and can score with both the point and the edge of the blade. The sabre evolved from cavalry weapons used by mounted troops. Its techniques reflect its military heritage, with slashing attacks and an emphasis on athleticism. The target area in sabre includes everything above the waist (except the hands). Successful sabre fencers typically possess lightning-quick reflexes and an aggressive fencing style. Like foil, sabre employs right of way rules to determine which fencer scores when both hit. However, the pace is generally much faster. Choose sabre if you like speed, explosive action, and dynamic exchanges!
