What we do
Modern Olympic fencing features three distinct disciplines: foil, épée, and sabre. Each weapon has its own unique characteristics, rules, and historical origins. Texas Fencing competes in all three weapons, allowing students to discover which discipline best suits their natural abilities and preferences. Whether you're an experienced swordsman or completely new to the sport, we welcome you to join our team! We offer introductory classes, competitive opportunities, and equipment for all three weapons.
WHAT IS FOIL?The foil is a light thrusting weapon weighing less than 500 grams. It has a flexible rectangular blade and a small circular guard that protects the hand. The foil originated as a practice weapon for dueling with rapiers. In foil, points are scored only by hitting the opponent's torso (including the back, chest, shoulders, and groin). Hits to the arms, legs, neck, or head do not count. Many coaches recommend foil for new fencers because it teaches fundamental techniques and tactical concepts that translate well to other weapons. Choose foil if you enjoy technical precision, tactical complexity, and elegant bladework!
